EAST MOLINE, IL – The first time they tried to honor Gary Webb at his home track, Mother Nature had other plans, but tonight it looks like the hall of fame late model racer is going to get honored on a perfect night for racing.
East Moline Speedway is hosting its Salute to Gary Webb Hall of Fame Night to honor the 72-year-old Bluegrass native who still regularly races in the IMCA late model division. He began his career in 1972 and now has 523 feature wins from 63 different tracks across the U.S. – most recently at “E-Mo” just last weekend.
Gary was the 2000 NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Late Model National Champion after winning 22 of the 54 events he entered that season at Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway and Farley Speedway – now known as 300 Raceway – with 16 of those wins coming from Dubuque, which hosted only 18 races that year due to weather. He finished second in the national points in 2001, but won the Most Popular Driver award.
For the 25th anniversary of the NWRS in 2006, NASCAR named Gary as one of the series’ Top 25 racers all-time. He also won the UMP national titles in 1984 and 1985. In 2008, he was inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame.
Tonight’s show at East Moline Speedway will feature a 56-lap $2,000-to-win late model race, as well as the track’s regular IMCA-sanctioned modifieds and northern sportmods, sport compacts, IMCA mod lites, and some “nostalgia racers.”
Racing in the Iowa Racing News coverage area tonight also includes a stock car “king of the hill,” micro sprints, and RV races at The New Raceway Park in Jefferson, SD, and the King Turkey Day races at Worthington Speedway in Minnesota. Here are all the details:
